The excitement in the air was palpable as we, along with our trusty companions Monet and Mabel, stepped into the bustling after-school club. The room, usually filled with the sounds of children's chatter and laughter, momentarily hushed in anticipation.
Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) has always been close to our hearts, and introducing it to young minds is even more special. Monet, the calm and majestic Siberian Shepherd, and Mabel, a bubbly and affectionate Sausage Pup, were ready for their session. Their tails wagged in unison, sensing the adventure ahead.
As the introduction began, we could see eyes wide with wonder. The children were briefed about the importance of gentle touch and the ways in which dogs perceive human emotions. It wasn’t long before Monet and Mabel were surrounded by a group of eager children, each awaiting their turn to interact with the dogs.
The session was divided into segments, allowing each child ample time to bond with our canine companions. While Monet showcased his therapeutic skills, soothing some of the more anxious kids with his serene presence, Mabel was all about play and energy. Her antics, from fetching toys to rolling over for belly rubs, had the room echoing with joyous laughter.
One particularly moving moment was when a reserved young boy, initially hesitant, slowly approached Monet. With a gentle nudge and a soft gaze, Monet seemed to understand. The connection they shared, silent yet profound, encapsulated the very essence of AAT.
Wrapping up, we initiated a feedback circle. Children shared their experiences, expressing feelings of calm, happiness, and even a newfound appreciation for animals. Some spoke of their own pets at home, while others, previously fearful of dogs, found confidence in their new furry friends.
As we packed up to leave, the children, with faces lit up in smiles, waved goodbye, making us promise another visit soon. The transformative power of AAT was evident. With Monet and Mabel leading the way, we left the after-school club, hearts full, looking forward to our next adventure
